What Goes Best With A Fine Film, Red Or White?

Vancity Theatre Announces New Liquor License

To celebrate our new permanent liquor license we mounted an informal poll of the city’s tastemakers – some of our finest restauranteurs, bar owners and bon viveurs – and we asked them to nominate their favourite booze movies. The list was long and mouth-watering, ranging from Sideways and Withnail and I to WC Fields, Cat Ballou and Harvey. In the end though, this vintage seventy-five-year old classic was the name on nearly everyone’s lips.

THE THIN MAN

June 3 // 7:00

Dir WS Van Dyke // USA 1934 // 91 mins // 35mm

Cast: William Powell, Myrna Loy, Maureen O'Sullivan, Nat Pendleton

Adapted from Dashiell Hammett’s novel, The Thin Man stars William Powell as Nick Charles, a debonair dipsomaniac ex-detective, happily married to loaded socialite Nora (Myrna Loy). Nominally a mystery thriller, The Thin Man is really a sparkling screwball comedy, and the rare movie to find unapologetic – if unnerving – delight in both the marriage of intellectual equals and a bottomless martini glass. Incidentally, the movie was shot in just 16 days, six months after the publication of the novel, and one year after the repeal of Prohibition.

After the main feature, we hope you will join us in our Citytv Atrium Lounge for a glass of wine or beer (or two), and a free screening of a surprise film, another of the best booze movies ever made. Cheers!

A fine selection of beer and wine will be available for purchase at most of the Vancity Theatre screenings. No alcohol will be served when the Vancity Theatre is screening films classified for youth under 19.
