Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Canadian Literature Quarterly
November 2 & 4

Fifty years ago this fall marked the publication of the first issue of Canadian Literature, a quarterly dedicated to the critical discussion of Canadian writing published by the English Department at UBC. Half a century and five editors later the journal has only gone from strength to strength.

In honour of this notable anniversary, Can-Lit and the Vancity Theatre present two classic Canadian stories in their cinematic incarnations.

Farley Mowatt’s short story ‘Walk Well, My Brother’ was brought to the screen as The Snow Walker. Writer-director Charles Martin Smith had previously played Mowatt in the movie Never Cry Wolf and was subsequently invited by the author to adapt any of his books. Smith cast Vancouver actor Barry Pepper as the 50s seaplane pilot, Charlie Halliday, and Annabella Piugattuk is Kanaalaq, the ailing young Inuit girl who is his only passenger when they crash deep in the arctic tundra – and his best chance of survival.

Writer-director Charles Martin Smith will introduce the screening and take questions afterwards.

Jeremy Podeswa (The Five Senses) wrote and directed this haunting, lyrical film of Anne Michaels’ supposedly unfilmable novel about Jakob Beer, a Polish boy who is rescued from the Nazis by a Greek archeologist. Though raised far from those horrors in Toronto, he never escapes his memories of the family he lost in the Holocaust. His attachment to the past inevitably affects his relationships with the archeologist Athos (Serbedzija) and first wife Alex (Pike).

Please come and join in the discussion after the screening.
