The Inffinito Group and the Vancouver International Film Centre are pleased to fulfill their promise at last year’s sold out Closing Ceremonies by bringing back the 2nd Brazilian Film Festival of Vancouver, from July 8 12 at the Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street). Due to the success of the 2008 event, the festival will again present the best and most recent national productions from Brazil, as well as guest filmmakers. In total, six animated shorts and eight feature-length films will be screened, including four documentaries and four dramas.
The Opening Film of the festival on July 8 at 6:30 pm, Veronica, (Dir. Mauricio Farias) is a drama about a disillusioned and stressed public school teacher in an underprivileged neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Everything changes when one of her students stays behind after school hours. Two documentaries tackle controversial subjects: in the Closing Film of the Festival Smoking I Wait, the director Adriana L. Dutra, a smoker attempting to quit the addiction, portrays her anxieties and the different aspects of one of the most lethal industries of the twenty-first century. Cinderellas, Wolves, and One Enchanted Prince, profiles young Brazilian women trapped in sex trafficking from Brazil to Berlin. Two entertaining and fun music documentaries are also in the programme: Enchanted Word travels through Brazil’s music history, from Bossa Nova to rap; Favela on Blast shows the culture of funk carioca, a musical rhythm that merges the American electronic funk from the 1980s with several Brazilian sounds.
Dramatic features are also centre stage in Romance, where a theatre actor/director falls in love with the actress who stars in his staging of Tristan & Isolda. Festival Guest: Producer Paula Lavigne. Last Stop 174 recounts the life of Sandro do Nascimento, who hijacked a bus and kept a group of hostages for several hours, resulting in a police shoot out. The film is by famed Brazilian director Bruno Barreto.
Two “Dialogues” between Brazil and Canada for the film industry will be presented: Co-production The Future on July 9 at 4 pm; and Directing Different Ways to See Cinema on July 11 at 4 pm. Roberto Farias, the director, producer and president of the Academia Brasileira de Cinema will be one of the panelists, along with Canadian and Brazilian filmmakers.

Formed by Inffinito Núcleo de Arte e Cultura, Inffinito Eventos e Produções (Brasil) and Inffinito Foundation (USA), Inffinito Group aims at promoting and showing Brazilian cultural production within Brazil and abroad. Partners Adriana Dutra, Cláudia Dutra and Viviane Spinelli are renowned in the entertainment and events industry. Inffinito Group was created 13 years ago and it is acknowledged as an innovative, powerful, dynamic and creative company, able to expose a Brazilian image in new markets. In 1995, the three partners took the first steps of what was to become the Inffinito Festival Circuit, when they created the Brazilian Film Festival of Miami. Its first edition was in 1997, and from thereon, the trio have created big Brazilian filmmaking festivals throughout the world. In 2003, Viviane, Cláudia and Adriana produced the 1st Brazilian Film Festival of New York, presently called Cine Fest Petrobras-Brasil. Three years later, they created the Cine Fest Brasil-Barcelona, thus consolidating the Inffinito Festival Circuit, which in 2007, was held in Miami and New York, in the US; in Barcelona, Spain; and in Frascatti, in Italy. For 12 years, Inffinito Film festivals have reached more than 600 thousand people. This year, the Circuit will include London, Miami, New York, Istanbul, Vancouver, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Buenos Aires and Canudos (Bahias).
