A masterful multicharacter drama.—Eddie Cockrell, Variety

BEAUTY IN TROUBLE January 14-17, 7:00 and 9:15

Czech Republic 2006 // Director: Jan Hrebjk // 110 min // 35mm

VANCITY THEATRE EXCLUSIVE!

The Robert Graves poem by the same name inspired Jan Hrebejk and Petr Jarchovsk (the team responsible for the Czech hits Cosy Dens, Divided We Fall, Pupendo and Up and Down.) to create this memorable dramedy about "sex, money and a good person." The film features sharp dialogue, unexpected subplots, and a tour-de-force performance by Ana Geislerova as Marcela, the beauty of the title.

Marcela and her husband Janda lost everything in the 2002 Prague flood. Fed up with their mouldy apartment and Janda's involvement with car thieves, Marcela takes her kids moves into the cramped apartment her mother shares with creepy diabetic Risa, her second husband.

As tensions mount, Marcela's good angel materializes in Evzen Benes, an elegant Czech expat who is in Prague to reclaim property expropriated by the Communists. When Benes' car ends up in Janda's chop shop, the two meet. And with Janda behind bars, Benes offers welcome protection...

Jan Hrebejk studied at the Prague Film and Television Academy of Musical Arts. His professional directorial debut was a short film for Czech Television. Hrebejk’s feature film Divided We Fall received an Oscar® nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and was shown in theatres worldwide. In 1997, Hrebejk made his theatre directorial debut with Christopher Hampton’s Dangerous Liaisons.

Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, Czech Lion Awards 2007 Best European Film, Denver International Film Festival 2006 Special Jury Prize, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2006
