The world's foremost documentarian, Fred Wiseman turns his camera on the Paris Opera Ballet as they work on no less than seven productions, ranging from Rudolph Nureyev's The Nutcracker to Orpheus by Pina Bausch. Both a banquet for dance lovers and a typically astute examination of the inner workings of this institution, La Danse insists on the dedication and discipline required in the artistic process, as well as the transcendent beauty it produces.

“Heart stirring beauty and grace… La Danse takes you inside the essence of dance… If you don't already swoon over this art form, this film will make you wonder what took you so long.”
- Kenneth Turan , LA Times

“Glorious! A superb portrait of the perennial pas de deux between art and commerce.”
– Jason Anderson, Eye Weekly (Toronto)

Frederick Wiseman was born in Boston and attended Yale Law School. He has directed over thirty-five feature documentaries and has received multiple awards. His filmography includes Titicut Follies (67), High School (68), Law & Order (69), Ballet (95), La Comédie-Française ou l'amour joué (96), Public Housing (97) and La Danse – Le Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris (09).
