In his rarely screened classic, Ron Havilio (at VIFF 2007 with Potosi, the Journey) lyrically interweaves his family’s history with the city of Jerusalem’s. Encompassing everything from the Biblical to the modern, and constantly shifting between past and present, Havilio’s monumental film depicts a city where ancient history informs all aspects of modern life.
“Like the city it portrays Fragments * Jerusalem is a film of unexpected byways. Extending the boundaries of urban flaneurism, Havilio is both a walker in the city and a time traveller—in Jerusalem, it goes with the territory. The city does not live in the past so much as its history and historical destiny exist in the present. The discontinuous here-and-now of Havilio’s ‘fragments’ is infused with intimations of Biblical antiquity on the one hand and the realization of a millennial future on the other. Yet for all the tumult of wars, riots, pogroms, terrorist attacks (Jewish and Arab) that the movie records, Fragments * Jerusalem retains a serene detachment in its chronicle of daily life.”—J. Hoberman, Film Comment.
Fragments * Jerusalem will be shown in two parts: the First Cycle, comprising Chapters 1-3 (total running time: 164 minutes), screens Oct. 20, 22, 24, and the Second Cycle, comprising Chapters 4-7 (total running time: 194 minutes), screens Oct 21, 23, 25.
